Here at Lancer Labels, we have been printing labels for over 25 years, and more specifically have been printing Care Labels for the last 15 years. And the first question that pops in to mind after reading that is, What is a Wash Care Label?
So lets dive in to the world of care labels and see what we can discover
What is a Wash Care Label?
A wash care label provides crucial information about the proper care and maintenance of clothing and textiles. It includes instructions for washing, drying, and ironing, as well as any special care requirements. These labels help preserve the quality and longevity of the item and ensure compliance with industry standards.
A wash care label should include essential information to guide consumers on how to properly care for the garment or textile. This helps in maintaining the item’s quality and longevity. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the information that typically needs to go on a wash care label:
A wash care label should provide comprehensive care instructions to ensure the proper maintenance of a garment or textile. This includes details on washing, drying, ironing, professional care, fabric content, safety compliance, and sometimes additional branding or country of origin information. Providing clear and accurate care instructions helps consumers keep their items in good condition and ensures adherence to industry regulations.
Label Details & Care Symbols Just to name a few of the most common care instructions you will find, the Products Fabric Content (usually listed in percentages), Important detailed care instructions, both in text and care symbols format, The Country of origin (where it has been manufactured) and any important Warning Information, such as Keep Away From Fire, often printed in Red. The Care Symbols can indicate the Washing cycle temperature, whether it needs to be delicately washed, Dry cleaning or Hand Washed. Whether an item can be Ironed or not, Tumble dried or hung out to dry. The list is endless. With several variations of each symbol, they are pretty universal, so it doesn’t often matter where you are in the world, most will understand what they mean. We cant however help you with how to operate your washing machine! The actual Symbols themselves are a Trademark of Ginetex. And as they hold the rights to the symbols, if you ever do supply products with them on, you will require their license. Other types of labels that are often found in garments include Size labels, Swing Tags, Sequential numbered Labels or Brand Labels.
We will often hear these statements from clients, But why are the labels so itchy? They need to be cut out! A lot of the cheaper materials can be a little irritating on the skin, usually the firmer anti fray materials, and unfortunately are cheap for a reason as they haven’t been checked or tested correctly. This is why their is a Global standard called OEKO-TEX®, part of which care label materials are tested to see their effects on human skin. To pass this test, the products must not cause any harm to skin. Therefore it is more common to find the softer materials sewn in to garments, as those with delicate skin will tell you how irritating labels can be! All of our care label materials and printed inks have passed these tests, so we can assure you that you will not be cutting our labels out due to skin irritation, even if their is a cut line printed on the labels!
If you are a supplier of Soft Toys, then it is likely you are already aware of the standards required for these products to pass through before ending up on the shelf ready to sell. The same goes for the labels attached to the soft toys. They must pass the EN71 requirements. Similarly to OEKO-TEK, both label material and printed inks must be tested and must pass the EN 71-3:2019 Safety of Toys – Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements regulation to be able to be attached to the toys prior to being sold. The test highlights the highest areas of risk and pinpoints which chemicals and toxic elements are likely to be found in the products. Making sure that every part of the toy and label is safe for both Children and Adults. Just in case someone fancy’s chewing them!
So there you have it, Care Labelling can be a complete minefield. Make sure you do your homework before committing to any type of printing. But when you’re ready to order wash care labels, we will be ready too!
